The 280 Skills the SAT Math Section Really Tests, and How the Plan Fixes Them

By Dr. Brink, Ph.D., 32 years teaching mathematics

The short version: the SAT math section looks like four topics, but underneath it runs on about 280 smaller skills, most of them things you first met years ago. A score stops climbing when a handful of those skills are shaky, not because the test is hard. The whole point of the 30-day plan is to find the exact ones costing you points and fix only those. This page shows you the full list, so you can see what the plan is actually built to repair.

Most SAT prep throws all four topics at you and hopes something sticks. That wastes the days you have. The skills below build on each other, from Grade 5 arithmetic up through algebra, functions, geometry and statistics, and a single weak link near the bottom quietly breaks a whole group of questions higher up. Fix the link and the group stops going wrong at once. That is why the plan diagnoses first and drills second.

What the section looks like

Forty-four questions in two 35-minute modules, 70 minutes in total. A graphing calculator (Desmos) and a formula reference sheet are on screen the whole time, and about a quarter of the questions have no answer choices, so you type the answer yourself. Math is scored out of 800, and every question falls into one of four areas.

The four areas, and how they are weighted

The 280 skills underneath, what the plan actually fixes

Here is the full list, grouped the way math really builds. The grade tag on each one shows how far back it goes. When your practice tests flag a weak area, it is almost always one of these, sitting quietly underneath the question you got wrong. The plan names the exact ones for you and spends your days on those instead of on everything.

Arithmetic 2

The number sense everything else stands on.

Pre-algebra 31

Signed numbers, fractions and the first move into symbols.

Algebra 148

The largest strand by far, and the spine of the whole test.

Functions 26

Reading equations, graphs and tables as one connected idea.

Geometry and Trigonometry 42

Shape, space, angle and the trig the SAT actually asks for.

Statistics and Data 27

Reading data, rates, spread and what a graph is really saying.

Problem-Solving Habits 4

The moves a strong test-taker makes on any question.

The 30-day plan finds which of these skills are costing you points, then fixes only those, one day at a time.
